Contemporary Global Issues
Note: You must be enrolled in the Adult High School Program to take this class.
Social Studies Elective-Contemporary Global Issues will be an interdisciplinary look at events and issues making the news in the world today. Using a multitude of resources the class will emphasize hands on activities and involve a variety of social studies and communication skills using traditional and non-traditional methods in studying and delivering the curriculum. The student will be expected to read, write, listen and speak extensively in a small group environment. The integrated study of the social sciences and humanities promotes civic competence. Within the school program social science provides a coordinated, systematic study of global issues and events as well as appropriate content from the humanities, mathematics and natural sciences. The study of social science helps people develop the ability to make informed and reasoned decisions for the public good as citizens of a culturally diverse, democratic society in an interdependent world.
The individual disciplines that comprise social science are often taught independently, yet all of these disciplines recognize that they owe much to the others. Students today need to have a broad understanding of political and economic systems as well as a better understanding of world history. Knowledge of world geography and a grasp of how the concepts of social science can help interpret human actions and prepare them for careers and lifelong learning are also vital for today's student. All of these skills needed in the social sciences can be developed through a study of events occurring in the world at the current time.
