Internet Access Policy

The purpose of the Library Internet Access Policy is to enhance and support the "Mission of Carteret Community College". All students, faculty, staff, and public patrons are responsible for using CCC's Internet resources in an effective, ethical and lawful manner. Computers in the library are intended to provide access to the library catalog, electronic library resources, the Internet, and Microsoft Office applications. They may be used to search for information, research term paper topics, and explore personal interests within the guidelines of the college's "Technology Acceptable Use Policy". The TAUP does not allow certain activities on the college's network.
These include, but are not limited to:

  • No pornography or offensive content
  • No online chatting or instant messaging of any kind
  • No games
  • No peer-to-peer file sharing programs (i.e. LimeWire, Kazaa, Skype, etc.)
  • No downloads to the computer without prior library staff permission

CCC students, faculty and staff have first priority in using the Internet and Library computers for research and other acceptable uses.
Public patrons may access the Internet for a maximum of two-hours per day when computers are available. During busy hours, computer access may be limited to 30 minutes.

Netiquette

CCC students, faculty, staff, and public patrons are expected to abide by generally accepted rules of network etiquette for e-mail and computer usage. These include, but are not limited to, being polite and using appropriate language at all times.

Printing

Users may print out their work on the laser printers located at the Circulation Desk. The cost is $.10 per page for black & white and $.50 per page for color. All prints out must be picked up and paid for at the Circulation Desk, including mistakes. If you need assistance with printing, please ask at the Information Desk.

Laptops & Wireless

Personal laptops are welcome in the library. While the library does have wireless access, for security purposes, it is password-protected and only available to curriculum students, faculty and staff. Student laptops are available for library use only and must be checked out on their library account.

Computer Sign-in

Anyone using a computer in the library’s facilities must sign in and show valid federal, state or CCC photo ID at the front desk. This includes laptops, whether personal or library owned. By signing in, the user must agree to the Library Computer Usage Agreement. Users must sign out when they are finished. Any computer left unattended for more than 15 minutes may be forfeited to another user.

Privacy

E-mail and Internet searching are not guaranteed to be private in a public environment. Please ask a library staff person regarding any privacy concerns before transmitting personal information.

Computer Policy Abuse Penalties

Patrons will be given an initial warning. A second warning will be a final warning. If a third instance of abusing computer policy should occur, the patron will be banned from using the library computers for one month. After returning from a one month ban, if the patron should abuse computer policy again, they will be banned permanently.
