Group Study Room Policy

Carteret Community College Library provides group study rooms as a courtesy to students who need a quiet place to engage in collaborative study. The library has two group study rooms for this purpose:

  • Study Room 1 (Room 415): Accommodates up to four people. Also contains individual video and microform viewing equipment, and a genealogy research computer.
  • Study Room 2 (Room 410): Accommodates up to six people. Also contains video equipment for group viewing.

Reservations:

Group study rooms can only be used by groups of two or more people for the purpose of group study or work on academic projects. Students have first priority in reserving a group study room, while faculty/staff of the College have second priority. Public patrons have third priority and are welcome to use the room on a first come, first serve basis only if the room is not already reserved. Advance reservations are not accepted for public patrons.

Reservations are required by students, faculty and staff, and may be made no more than one week in advance by contacting the Circulation Desk by phone (222-6213) or by signing up in person. Same-day use is available on a first come, first serve basis. Rooms may be reserved for blocks of two hours at a time. If no other reservations have been made, the room reservation may be extended for an additional two-hour time block at the conclusion of the first reserved time block.

Room Usage Guidelines:

  1. Please check in at the Circulation Desk upon arrival to make sure your study room is ready and available.
  2. Once a group has signed up for a room, they should remain in the room. If the group needs to leave the library, all belongings must be taken with them. The library is not responsible for lost or stolen items.
  3. If someone in a group needs to leave the room, someone in the group should stay behind to watch over belongings. This also lets library staff know that the room is still in use.
  4. Rooms left unattended for 10 minutes will be forfeited if another group needs to use the room.
  5. Rooms must be vacated at the end of the reserved time.
  6. No food is allowed in the study rooms.
  7. No cell phone usage is allowed in the study rooms.
  8. Group study rooms are not intended for use by only one person. Library staff may ask an individual to leave if a group needs to use the room unless the individual is using the room for another designated purpose (as described with Study Room 1). Study carrels are also available for individual study space.
  9. Should library staff observe groups abusing the room (i.e. loud noise, food, playing games, etc.), the group will be asked to leave. Study rooms are not sound-proof.
  10. Library staff reserves the right to move a group from one room to another to better accommodate both groups’ needs.
  11. Library staff reserves the right to bump a group from a study room to accommodate another group of higher priority.
