CARTERET CORRECTIONAL UNIT

Carteret Community College offers a certificate in Horticulture Technology to inmates assigned to Carteret Correctional Unit in Newport, North Carolina. In addition to the curriculum courses already mentioned, the College's Division of Corporate and Community Education offers a wide range of academic courses including, but not limited to, Adult Basic Education, GED Preparation, and Job Readiness Training. Inmates are admitted to these programs after appropriate screening and testing by Carteret Community College and Department of Correction staff.

DEVELOPMENTAL STUDIES PROGRAM

The Developmental Studies Program provides the "Open Door" for admission to Carteret Community College. This program assists students who, when seeking entry into the College's degree, diploma and certificate programs, discover that they need preparation for college-level work. Developmental Studies provides these students with a preparatory program in academic skills to enable them to pursue course work in their chosen program of study.

Applicants are required to take placement tests prior to enrollment in curriculum programs. An applicant whose placement test scores in reading, English, and mathematics fall below the required minimum established by the College is assigned to a Developmental Studies Advisor for help in selecting proper courses. These courses must be taken prior to or, in some cases, concurrently with specifically designated curriculum courses.

Development Studies courses are available to anyone who wishes to improve his or her basic skills. These courses provide opportunities for improvement in the areas of reading, English, mathematics, and study skills. Course credits represent institutional credits only for the purpose of assessing fees, VA and financial aid benefits. Credits are not counted toward graduation.

The Developmental Studies courses are designed to provide Carteret Community College students with a solid foundation on which they can build firm academic and life careers.

Developmental Advisor Assignment

Any student who places into at least one developmental course will be assigned to a developmental advisor. This advisor assignment will remain until all courses numbered below 100 are completed. These students are also required to enroll in ACA 115, Success and Study Skills.

ENG 070 or 080
RED 080 or 090
MAT 050 or 060

Any student who places into one or more of the following remedial courses, but did not place into any of the developmental courses listed above, will be assigned to a curriculum advisor from the chosen program of study. Such students will be expected to complete the remedial courses before moving on into most curriculum courses. Students and advisors should watch course prerequisites closely, as many of the courses required in programs of study have either placement or one of these remedial courses as a prerequisite.
