English Language Acquisition

English Language Acquisition (ELA) (previously ESL) is a program of instruction designed for adults to achieve competency in the English language and acquire the basic and more advanced skills needed to function effectively as parents, workers, and citizens in the United States.

Instruction includes literacy and English language acquisition and instruction on the rights and responsibilities of citizenship and civic participation and may include workforce training. English Language Acquisition – Beginning
The English Language Acquisition is for students who are foreign born, 16 years of age or older and English is not their first language. These classes are designed to help the student learn to communicate in English. In addition to learning the basics fo reading and writing the English language, students learn how to get help in emergency situations, how to shop for their families, how to deal with currency, learn to use a computer, and prepare for employment.

English Language Acquisition – Intermediate/Advanced
The English Language Acquisition – Intermediate/Advanced is for students who are foreign born, 16 years of age or older and English is not their first language. In this class, students read more complex materials, write well-organized paragraphs, listen to and discuss a variety of topics, using more advanced vocabulary and grammar.
