English Language Acquisition

English Language Acquisition (ELA) (previously ESL) is a program of instruction designed for adults to achieve competency in the English language and acquire the basic and more advanced skills needed to function effectively as parents, workers, and citizens in the United States.

Instruction includes literacy and English language acquisition and instruction on the rights and responsibilities of citizenship and civic participation and may include workforce training. English Language Acquisition – Beginning
The English Language Acquisition is for students who are foreign born, 16 years of age or older and English is not their first language. These classes are designed to help the student learn to communicate in English. In addition to learning the basics fo reading and writing the English language, students learn how to get help in emergency situations, how to shop for their families, how to deal with currency, learn to use a computer, and prepare for employment.

English Language Acquisition – Multi-Level
The English Language Acquisition – Multi-Level is for students who are foreign born, 16 years of age or older and English is not their first language. This class emphasizes improvement in reading, writing, speaking, listening and using a computer for daily life events. Students describe family members, request help with problems, greetings and partings, wants, likes, opinions, and future plans. The students will understand spoken and written general and employment related language, prepare for employment, communicate on their own – works outside of the English class, and understand the culture and behavioral expectations of their new environment.

English as a Second Language – U.S. Citizenship
To prepare students for the U.S. Citizenship Naturalization test. This course is designed to help students show they can use English by reading, speaking, listening, and writing. Students will also learn about American history and U.S. government. Teaches the skills necessary to: complete the Application for Naturalization (N400); be successful in the INS interview; and pass the U.S. government and English literacy test required for naturalization.
