Medical Assisting

Medical Assistants perform routine administrativre and clinical tasks to keep health care delivery running smoothly. The duties of medical assistants vary widely from office to office, depending on office location, size and speciality. Administrative duties include answering phones, greeting patients, updating and filing patient records, filling out insurance forms, handling correspondence, scheduling appointments, managing office finances, and arranging for laboratory services and hospital admissions.

Clinical duties vary widely according to state law and include taking medical histories and recording vital signs, explaining treatment procedures to patients, preparing patients for examinations and minor office surgery, and managing medical instruments. Medical assistants collect and prepare laboratory specimens or perform basic laboratory tests in the physician office laboratory. They instruct patients about medications and special diets, prepare patients for x-rays, take ECG's, remove sutures and change dressings.
Graduates of CAAHEP accredited medical assisting programs may be eligible to sit for the American Association of Medical Assistants' Certification Examination to become a Certified Medical Assistant. Employment opportunities include physicians' offices, health maintenance organizations, health departments and hospitals.
