What is a Partial Internet
course as compared to an Internet course?
Our Partial Internet courses have both a campus component
and an online component. The mix of Internet/campus activities varies
with the class and instructor. In the Curriculum Schedule of Courses,
Partial Internet sections are labeled PI.
Internet courses are completely online. All course materials are provided
online, and students contact the instructor via the Internet (or by telephone).
In the Curriculum Schedule of Courses, Internet course sections are denoted
by IN.
What is Blackboard?
Blackboard is a course management software package that allows the
students and the instructor to navigate the course as if they were
present in a classroom. The functions of Blackboard allow the students
to do almost anything they would normally do in a face-to-face classroom.
How do I get to my course?
- Open your browser and go to the following web address: http://blackboard.carteret.edu
- A login window will appear. Type in your username and password.
If you have done this successfully, you will be logged into your
course.
- It is a good idea to write down your username and password in
case you forget them.
What is my username and
password?
- Your username is your last name (lower case) followed by the numbers
of your birthday.
Example: John Smith born July
4 -- username would be smith0704
- Your initial password is the same as your username (refer to above
example).
- You can change your password once you log into your course, but
your username will never change.

How do I change my password?
- Go to the user tools and select:
Why doesnt my password work when I log in?
- There are several different reasons why your password may not
be working. If you create a new password but you are unable to log
into your course when you type it in, keep trying. Continue to try
logging in with your new password at least four more times.
- If you are still unsuccessful, check the CAPS LOCK button on your
keyboard. If your password contains all lowercase letters, and the
CAPS LOCK is on, Blackboard will not accept your password. The same
is true if you have created a password with all uppercase letters
but your are typing in your password with all lowercase letters.
- In addition, check your username. Even though you may have entered
you first name and last name in the "Personal Information"
section, your username does not change. Your username will remain
the same as your instructor originally gave it to you.
- If all else fails, fill out the Help Desk Request Form and request
that your password be changed. Your password should be reset to
the original password you were given within 24 hours. The Help Desk
will inform you when this has been done via E-mail.

Does my class meet, that
is, do students have to sit down at computers at the same time each
day?
- The wonders of technology have allowed you as an online student
to access your accounts 24 hours a day, seven days a week and from
any Internet portal in the world.
- You are, however, required to meet on campus if you are enrolled
in a Partial Internet Class.
How do I know when assignments
are due?
- Assignments may have varying due dates based on the requirements
and philosophy of the instructor. Be sure to check the syllabus
of your instructor or E-mail them with any questions you may have.
How do I submit my assignments?
- Submission of assignments may be done in different ways. If it
is an assignment within the infrastructure of Blackboard like a
test, quiz, or survey, there is usually a submit button on the bottom
right hand corner of the assignment. Clicking on this automatically
submits the assignment and gives you a receipt of the submission.
- If the assignment is a document that needs to be submitted electronically,
your instructor may have you submit an E-mail with an attachment.
The document, however, may need to be saved in a particular format,
such as "Rich Text File." Be sure to check with your instructor
about these details.

I just posted a message
in the Discussion Board. How can I see what my classmate just posted
in response?
- Click the "Reload" or "Refresh" button on
your browser to update the Discussion Board page. You will be unable
to see any recently posted items unless you refresh the page you
are viewing.
How will I know that my
instructor has received my assignments?
- If you submit the assignment using the Blackboard infrastructure,
you will receive a "receipt." If you submit an E-mail,
the E-mail server may give you a receipt of it or you can check
out your folder of "sent items" to see if it exists there.
How do I contact my instructor?
- Your instructors E-mail is usually listed on the syllabus
or can be accessed by clicking on the communication button of your
Blackboard account. Also, check the Staff Information area and you
will likely find the telephone number as well.
Top
Can I talk to the instructor
or other students in private?
- Yes. By using the communication button in your course page, you
can E-mail a single person or even a group of people. The E-mail
can be public for all to see or private for "their eyes only."
Where do I take tests?
- Using Blackboard gives you the opportunity to take tests online.
These tests may be comprised of multiple choice, true/false, or
short-answer essay type questions. Check with your instructor as
to the whereabouts of the assignments within the course page. Alternatively,
some instructors require students to take proctored tests, and in
such instances they will give you specific information.
What do I do if I have
completed my assignment or test and try to submit it but there is
no submit button at the bottom of the page?
- Sometimes the infrastructure of Blackboard has problems. These
are usually minor and can be easily corrected. By clicking on your
"Back" button of your browser, you will be taken back
to the previous screen..
I was trying to take a quiz,
but I lost my Internet connection. What happened?
- If you are using an Internet service provider such as Cape Lookout
or Coastal Net, your connection to the Internet may be interrupted
while you are taking a quiz. When you are taking a quiz in Blackboard,
you are not actually navigating the web. Your Internet provider
sees this as inactivity and will try to close down your connection.
You may receive a message saying that your Internet connection will
be closed unless you click "Continue" or "Yes."
Click the appropriate button to verify that you would like to continue
using the Internet, and you will be able to finish completing your
quiz.
- If you lose your connection before you have completed your quiz,
contact your instructor immediately.

Will I be able to work ahead?
- Most students will be able to pace themselves appropriately and
in some cases you may be able to work ahead. This is up to the discretion
of the instructor. Be sure to ask them.
What does a red exclamation
point mean next to my grade for an assignment?
- A red exclamation point usually means that an assignment is not
graded or cannot be graded. It is up to the instructor to remove
these and put a grade in its place. Contact your instructor if the
exclamation point remains for a while.
Top
How do I get to see my
grade on an assignment, or for the class?
- There is a function in Blackboard that allows you to see your
grade soon after it is posted by the instructor! There should be
a "tools" button in your class page. By clicking on this,
you will find a link called "check my grade." Click on
this and see all of the assignments listed and your grades for these
assignments.
