What Every CCC Distance Learner Needs to Know

If you are considering an Internet class, you should fully understand that:

  1. These classes typically require as much if not more effort and study time than traditional classes.  Active participation and a great deal of reading will be required of you.  Self-discipline, daily motivation, and good organizing skills are needed to keep up with the class.  Falling behind and chronic lateness are not acceptable.
  2. *You are responsible for already knowing how to use a mouse, search the Internet, receive / send / forward email with attachments, download / save / manage text files and other types of files, and cut / copy / paste, to give just a few examples of basic computer skills (with the exception of students in CIS 110, where these skills are taught).  Instructors are responsible for teaching specific subject matter; they cannot take time to teach computing.  If a course has prerequisites, you are responsible for that material; it will not be “reviewed” for you.
  3. While interaction with your instructor certainly is a feature of online learning, instructors are not available “24 x 7”.  Just as with traditional classroom instructors, you may wait 1, 2, or even 3 days (if a weekend is involved) for a response to a question.
  4. We recommend that first-time distance learning students take no more than two (2) Internet classes at once. Discuss this matter with your advisor.
  5. Email: when you register and pay fees, you are issued a college email account at no extra charge. We encourage you to use this account. For more information about Student Email, click here.
  6. Students planning to take their first CCC Internet course are required to successfully complete our online Distance Learning Orientation and/or attend a Blackboard Orientation Workshop each semester before they will be allowed to register for any such courses.

* With the exception of CIS 110
