Online Orientation

Research shows that students who complete an orientation are more likely to succeed as distance learners. This is particularly true with “first-timers”. Students who plan to enroll in their first CCC Internet course are required to complete our online Distance Learning Orientation before they will be allowed to register for such courses. This requirement is similar to our requirement for placement tests in reading, Math, and English. You’ll be asked to demonstrate basic computing skills; and you will learn how to navigate Blackboard, our course management system. You’ll be asked to demonstrate the use of its key features. You'll also learn what study habits are vital for successful distance learning. The tutorial is interactive—you'll complete short assignments and receive personal feedback.

Once you complete the Orientation, you will be notified by email. You must present the notice to your academic advisor before you will be allowed to register for Internet courses.

If you have difficulty with the Orientation, you are likely also to have difficulty with an Internet-delivered course and are at risk for dropping out or failing. In that case, you should delay taking such courses, and enroll instead in a classroom section of CIS 070 (Fundamentals of Computing), CIS 110 (Introduction to Computers), or CIS 111 (Basic PC Literacy), completing the course with a C or higher. Your advisor can help you select the proper computer course to fit your overall academic goals.
