Grants and Scholarships

Grants and scholarships are often called “gift aid” because they are free money—financial aid that doesn’t have to be repaid. Grants are often need-based, while scholarships are usually merit-based.  Carteret Community College Financial Aid Office awards scholarships to new, incoming students, continuing students, and graduating students and all students are encouraged to apply.

Grants and scholarships can come from the federal government, your state government, your college or career school, or a private or nonprofit organizations. Do your research, apply for any grants or scholarships you might be eligible for, and be sure to meet application deadlines!

GRANTS

Federal Pell Grant (FPELL)

This is the Federal government’s primary grant program.  Funding for this program ranges from $606 – $5,920 for the 2017-2018 academic year.  This grant is “gift aid” and does not have to be repaid as long as the student does not completely withdraw or is withdrawn from all courses for the semester.  Awards are based on the student’s EFC (expected family contribution) that is listed on the FAFSA.

The Department of Education has announced that students eligible for the Pell Grant may be able to receive a third disbursement during the same academic year.  Students may qualify for Year Round Pell beginning with the summer 2018 semester.

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG)

The FSEOG program is for students with financial need who, without the grant, would be unable to continue their education. Typical awards begin at $400.  Priority in awarding is given to students who are Pell grant eligible and have a zero EFC.

North Carolina Community College Grant (NCCCG)

The NCCCG grant is awarded to students who are North Carolina residents, are accepted for admission into an approved curriculum program, and are enrolled at least half-time.  Students must have completed a Free Application for Federal Student Aid.  Selection of recipients is made by the North Carolina State Education Assistance Authority.  Additional funding is available for students who enrolled for 15+ semester hours.  Awards are prorated based on enrollment.

North Carolina Education Lottery Scholarship (NCELS)

The NCELS program was created by the 2005 General Assembly to provide financial assistance to needy North Carolina resident students who are enrolled at least half-time.  Students must have completed a Free Application for Federal Student Aid.  Selection of recipients is made by the North Carolina State Education Assistance Authority.  Awards are prorated based on enrollment.

North Carolina Targeted Assistance (NCTAP)

The NCTAP  program is designed to assistance students who are enrolled in programs of study that are in high demand and prepare students for high demand occupations but enroll substantially fewer students than program capacity.  Students must be North Carolina residents.  Eligible programs of study are determined by the college.

SCHOLARSHIPS

The Financial Aid Office at CCC is committed to helping students reach their educational goals.  Scholarships are awarded based on a wide variety of criteria, such as volunteerism, community/college involvement, grade point average, major program of study, etc. All students are encourage to complete a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) and submit a CCC Scholarship Application 2017-18 .
