Campus Security and Annual Crime Report
Prepared Especially for the Students, Employees and Visitors of Carteret Community College
Does the College furnish its own security?
Yes, Carteret Community College operates an internal security force. Security officers are on campus Monday through Friday 7:30 am through 11:30 pm and on Saturdays 7:30 am through 5:30 pm. The Security Office is located on west side of the campus on Banks Street. It is clearly marked on the front and back of the building with the word “Security”. Security can be reached by dialing 252-222-6188.
How does the security officer function on Carteret’s campus?
Security officers routinely patrol the college campus parking lots and buildings. Security also offers assistance in starting vehicles and unlocking vehicles here on campus.
Are the security officers armed and do they have powers of arrest?
Carteret Community College’s Security Officers are not sworn law enforcement and do not carry weapons. However we do work very closely with Morehead City Police Department in the event we need law enforcement assistance. Campus security officers may detain alleged offenders for the short period it takes for law enforcement to arrive.
Have there been any serious criminal incidents on campus during the past year at Carteret Community College?
There have been no serious crimes or incidents on campus during the past year.
What type of other incidents have occurred on Carteret’s campus? Some of the incidents that have occurred here on campus have included larceny of personal property from vehicles that were left unsecured. We have also had some minor alcohol and drug violations. We have also experienced in the past some domestic disputes.
Are the security officers required to give reports of their patrols?
Yes. Each officer on duty must submit a written daily activity report and a detailed incident report when necessary.
How often during nighttime hours do security officers patrol the campus?
Security officers regularly patrol all parts of the campus, including buildings and parking lots during the evening classes. At any time if a student feels unsafe walking to their vehicle, they may contact security and ask for an escort to their vehicle. Morehead City Police Department also makes periodic patrols of the campus, especially at night.
Are other college employees required to make security reports?
All employees of Carteret Community College are tasked with making the campus a safe environment for all students and staff. They make periodic reports to security when they notice a unsafe act or unsafe area on campus.
What should students know concerning their security while on campus?
Students should familiarize themselves with the schools rules and regulations. You can help by keeping all valuables from being seen from the outside of your vehicle and making sure it is locked.
As a student, what should I know about parking while on campus?
The college requires all students and employees to have a current college parking decal on their vehicles. The parking passes are handed out through Student Activities located in the Bryant Student Center. Parking violations may result either in a warning, a parking ticket, or the vehicle being towed. The enforcement measure selected is determined by the severity of the offense.
What should I know concerning procedures for emergency response and/or evacuations?
Students, employees, and visitors may contact the college Security Department at 252-222-6188 or via email at: firstname.lastname@example.org if they have any concerns or questions regarding security at the college. Fire alarms and fire extinguishers are located in all buildings and are highly visible. Call 9-1-1 for situations involving fire, severe personal injury and threatening persons. All students, employees and visitors are expected to comply with evacuation drills conducted throughout the year.
