Improving Articulation for Workforce Development - NSF/ATE Grant

Carteret CC and NCSU will collaborate with Beaufort County, Brunswick, Coastal Carolina, College of the Albemarle, Craven, Lenoir, Pamlico, and Southeastern Community Colleges to develop a seamless approach to articulating college transfer students into Marine Science, Fisheries Science, Engineering, and Math and Science Education programs at NCSU while improving student success and faculty development.

Goal one is to improve curricular coherence between community college and upper division courses of study in order to ensure that graduates will be well-prepared to provide leadership in a rapidly changing workplace.

Goal one’s objectives include:

  • a. to provide freshmen and sophomore courses in technical science curricula that will enable students to transfer to NCSU as juniors; and
  • b. to increase by 25 percent the articulation of consortium community college students into the targeted programs at NCSU.
  • Goal two is to increase the retention and success of community college students after transfer into university science, mathematics, engineering, and technology programs.

    Goal two objectives include:

  • c. to improve the success of community college students in science and mathematics courses as measured by a grade of “C” or better for college-transfer science and mathematics courses;
  • d. to provide access for underrepresented rural groups into the targeted NCSU programs and to increase the diversity of transfer students; and
  • e. to develop a collaborative effort among consortium institutions for the advisement and orientation of transfer students.

    Goal three is to provide comprehensive professional development activities for university, community college, and secondary school science and mathematics faculty.
  • Goal three objectives include:

  • f. to offer professional development activities for science and mathematics faculty of universities, community colleges, and secondary schools.
  • g. to widely disseminate results of this project.

The Project Advisory Committee will collect and analyze data on students transferring from community colleges to NCSU. Data will be benchmarked against information on community college students enrolled at NCSU prior to implementation of the proposed changes.
