Mentoring Male Success Initiative
The Mentoring Male Success Initiative (MMSI) is a student coaching program designed to support the educational and professional aspirations of minority male students enrolled in North
Carolina community colleges. The North Carolina Community College System’s (NCCCS) MMSI was established in the fall of 2003 using 6 pilot programs. The goals of the program are higher education persistence, graduation and or transfer to a 4 year institution. The MMSI initiative provides inspirational counseling and motivation for a diverse group of students working to reach their goals.
Minority Students are often overlooked in our preoccupation to provide resources to academically efficient students. Below average students have the potential of dropping our due to a lack of supportive services, resources, and positive influences. Student are selected based on their need and desire to succeed while monitored throughout a intensive strategic two- year program that prepares them to pursue a four year degree and to assume leadership roles in their professions and in society.
The Minority Male Success Initiative transforms the culture of Carteret Community College’s diverse student population by reinforcing success and retention through mentoring relationships and group experiences.
Students in the MMSI initiative will be prepared to explain and promote the mission of the program and positively influence their peers.
