English Language Acquisition

English Language Acquisition (ELA) (previously ESL) is for students who are foreign born, and English is not their first language, with a focus on college and career readiness.  Services are provided to English language learners who are adults, including professionals with degrees and credentials in their native countries, that enables such adults to achieve competency in the English language and acquire the basic and more advanced skills needed to function effectively as parents, workers, and citizens in the United States.


English Language Acquisition
This class emphasizes improvement in reading, writing, speaking, listening and technology for daily life events.  Students describe family members, request help with problems, greetings and partings, wants, likes, opinions, and future plans.  The students will understand spoken and written general and employment related language, communicate on their own – work outside of the English class, and understand the culture and behavioral expectations of their new environment. These classes include instruction on the rights and responsibilities of citizenship and civic participation.
