Sexual Discrimination (Title IX)
What is Title IX?
Title IX is a federal civil rights law which requires that if a school (or its employees) knows or reasonably should know about sexual harassment (including sexual violence), the school must take immediate action to eliminate the sexual harassment, prevent its recurrence, and address its effects, even if the victim does not want to file a complaint. Sexual harassment is unwelcome conduct of a sexual nature. It includes unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal, nonverbal, or physical conduct of a sexual nature. Sexual harassment includes sexual violence such as rape, sexual assault, sexual battery, and sexual coercion.
CCC endeavors to create and sustain a positive, responsive, and safe learning environment and workplace. To do so, the college has established a policy that defines “unlawful harassment,” prohibiting behaviors that constitute unwelcome or unsolicited speech or conduct based upon race, sex, creed, religion, national origin, age, color, or handicapping condition as defined by G.S. 168A-3 that creates a hostile work or learning environment or circumstances involving quid pro quo.
The Unlawful Harassment, Stalking & Sex Offenses procedure includes the sexual harassment policy and procedures to address stalking, dating violence, sexual violence, and domestic violence. These procedures detail steps for students and employees to follow in reporting allegations of unlawful harassment.
Our Title IX Procedures can be found in the Carteret Community College General Catalog & Student Handbook, under section 7.2.
